Welcome to the World of Hypnotherapy
There are many misconceptions about hypnotherapy. The information below aims to answer some of the many questions regarding clinical hypnosis and how hypnosis could help you.
The techniques and principles of hypnosis have been used to benefit people for many years. When hypnosis is stripped of its past mysteriousness, it is seen for what it really is - a normal, natural healthy, state of mind and one, which virtually anyone can achieve with correct guidance. How Can Hypnosis help you? Hypnotherapy has been a great help in overcoming many problems including: smoking, eating disorders, nail-biting, bed wetting, insomnia, phobias, tension headaches, self confidence, study and examination preparation, nervousness, tension, other anxiety induced conditions, motivation and sports enhancement. There is no single form of treatment which can be used successfully for every condition. Hypnotherapy is no exception to this rule. However, it can be applied to a wide variety of problems as the primary therapy, or in conjunction with other treatments. Successful therapy depends on teamwork between you and the Hypnotherapist. The Hypnotherapist can only help you to help yourself. What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation, which is natural and safe. It is a state of mind where you are conscious and aware of physical sensations and surroundings. In hypnosis you are conscious and able to hear the Hypnotherapist's voice. In this relaxed state you are much more receptive to therapeutic suggestions. In hypnosis you cannot be made to say or do anything that you choose not to. You remain in control at all times. You can bring yourself out of the state of hypnosis any time you wish. The hypnotic state is maintained by mutual cooperation between you and the Hypnotherapist. How safe is Hypnosis? Hypnosis is a natural and beneficial experience that is free from drugs. Being a natural phenomenon, hypnosis is experienced at a level suitable to the individual. As the individual becomes more experienced, deeper levels of hypnosis can be achieved. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and you are hypnotised with the assistance and skill of the Hypnotherapist. With your newly acquired hypnosis skills, you can safely continue your self-development long after your final session. What does it feel like? Sensations of hypnosis vary from person to person. It is usual to experience a mild drowsiness together with pleasant feelings of comfort and well being; a feeling of heaviness and total relaxation. Upon completion of the hypnosis session, you will be alert and able to continue your normal activities. Can I be hypnotised? Virtually anyone can be hypnotised - some quicker than others. Much depends on the individual’s agreement to enter the state of hypnosis. Improvement comes with practice. The number of consultations required would depend on your needs and your desire to enter the hypnotic state. An estimate of the number of sessions should be discussed with your Hypnotherapist. Do I need a doctor's referral? A referral is normally not necessary. There may be situation where your Hypnotherapist may require you to have a medical opinion before using hypnosis. You will need to give your approval before a Hypnotherapist would discuss your case with your doctor or anyone else. (Subject to legal requirements). How do I find a qualified Hypnotherapist? Look in the Yellow Pages under "Hypnotherapy" for members of The Professional Clinical Hypnotherapists of Australia (PCHA). The PCHA website (www.pcha.com.au) has details of hypnotherapists in your area.
Ask what continuing training and experience the hypnotherapist is required to undertake as their annual Ongoing Professional Training.
The wider the training and experience, the more likely your hypnotherapist will be able to help you reach your goals. Most importantly, as with other professionals, you should feel completely comfortable and confident in your hypnotherapist. Hypnotherapy can help you with: Stress - Stress symptoms can build up and result in more serious illnesses. A qualified Hypnotherapist can help you manage your stress. Smoking - Smoking is often considered addictive; however, we believe it is more an emotional and physical habit. Hypnotherapy can help you emotionally to break this unhealthy and expensive habit. Study - Fear of failure often prevents us from performing our best. This becomes evident during study and exam preparation. By using hypnotherapy, you can learn to relax and release underlying anxieties. This will allow your mind to become clear and open to study and exams. Weight Control - Anxiety can create eating disorders. By raising your self-esteem and confidence, hypnotherapy can help you to obtain your goal weight. Motivation - Whether it is for work or other situations, without motivation, we are unlikely to succeed. By experiencing success through hypnosis, you will become more self confident and have the desire to achieve. Sport - Hypnotherapy can help you reach your potential with motivation and visualisation. Improve your competitiveness and the desire to win! Grief - Most think of grief as the effect of losing a loved one. Whilst this grief is a normal it also occurs when we lose our jobs or even moving house. Even what is considered as ‘good’ events can cause grief. I have worked with people who suffered from grief when they had won a major lottery prize or being promoted. The changes in their life style created the grief.
